Is the Paleo Diet A Healthy Option For Weight Loss?

The Paleo diet came out as a new plan to help everyone lose weight because it is the way that we are meant to eat. Hearkening back to a different age, the Paleo diet is very restrictive and does seem to help people lose weight if they follow the plan. While this diet does seem to work, it may not be the best idea for everyone.

The Paleo diet is similar to the ketogenic diet as you are encouraged to base your diet around high fat, moderate protein and low levels of carbohydrates.

The diet uses a lot of saturated fats, such as coconut oil, butter, and lard. Other fats such as avocado and olive oil are also used for many recipes. Animal proteins, including red meat, poultry, pork, eggs, organs and wild caught fish are also recommended.

Paleo dieters are to cut all grains and legumes from their diet. No wheat, rye, oats, corn, beans, peanuts, or rice are allowed on the diet. All vegetable oils, added sugars and processed foods are out on this diet. Moderate levels of fruit and vegetables are used to meet the carbohydrate needs of dieters and dairy other than butter are discouraged.

Based on the thinking that people are meant to eat as they did before their dependence on agriculture, the Paleo diet seems to work based on the same principle as the ketogenic diet – that by removing the carbohydrates, the body is forced to burn fats and proteins, which takes more energy and causes fat loss.

Many people will lose weight following the Paleo diet, but it does not seem to be a very healthy option. By cutting out the majority of fruits and vegetables from the diet, dieters will lose many vitamins and minerals necessary for their health. Eating a lot of saturated fats is not always a good idea, and may cause or contribute to heart problems over time. Most nutritionists recommend that people are careful about any diet plan that removes entire food groups, and the Paleo diet removes dairy and grains. This diet may work for weight loss, but it is not a healthy option over time.
